Background
The Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), launched by the Nigerian government in 2019, aims to improve access to primary healthcare in Nigeria by funding essential health services and operational costs for Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs). For this fund to be successful in achieving universal health coverage in Nigeria and reducing out-of-pocket health expenses for Nigerian residents, it is necessary for the government, journalists, citizens, and all interested parties to be supported with data about healthcare systems, even in the most remote areas.
Why the CheckMyPHC Tool?
In this light, Orodata Science launched a tool called CheckMyPHC on 31 July 2024, with Africa Data Hub’s support. With this tool, users have free access to accurate baseline information about healthcare in Nigeria. This information can enable the government and other high-level stakeholders to make informed decisions and refine their interventions and care approaches in order to effectively meet the needs of people who are often neglected.
The CheckMyPHC tool is part of a broader product called My PHC, which has 3 facets:
1. The Frontline Data Collection Programme,
2. The Frontline Investigative Programme, and the
This first version of the CheckMyPHC tool holds data on Primary Health Centres from 6 states – Sokoto, Taraba, Benue, CrossRiver, Anambra, ad Osun, from 6 geopolitical zones – North Central (NC), North East (NE), North West (NW), South West (SW), South East (SE), and South (SS) Nigeria, depicting information about the actual state of over 345 PHCs in these hard to reach areas. Phase 2 of the Frontline Data Collection Programme anticipates reaching over 1000 PHCs in 16 states. Whilst this first version is limited to Nigeria, we hope to use this model and lessons as a prototype for other African countries.
